Screenings for services are completed over the telephone. Callers are welcomed and screened by a qualified mental health professional. Part of the screening involves determining insurance coverage to make sure we refer to the appropriate provider. If callers are in crisis, they are immediately transferred to a crisis worker.
Our goal is to assist community members with making informed choices about their mental health services.
What Happens When Services are Requested?
When a person calls for services, a clinician will ask about the individual's concerns. If their symptoms meet the Michigan Mental Health Code criteria for a severe mental illness (adults), severe emotional disturbance (children) or an intellectual or developmental disability (children and adults), an appointment will be scheduled for an initial assessment at the local community mental health office.
If symptoms do not meet criteria set by the Mental Health Code, individuals will be referred to another community provider for mental health services.
Relatives, friends, physicians, people needing information, and others are encouraged to call if they have questions about access to the mental health system. Clinicians will discuss different alternatives based on the information provided.
What are the Criteria for Specialty Mental Health Services?
This is a complicated question and is best determined by a clinician. If one is having difficulty functioning in daily life due to mental health symptoms, then it would be appropriate to call for a screening. We can help find the right provider.
